The Lupila Secondary School

The Lupila Secondary School is located in a rural region in southwestern Tanzania.

Aktuell besuchen 491 Mädchen und 325 Jungen die weiterführende Schule.

Some of them also live in the school's accommodation, as some families live very far away in the countryside. Their education is partly financed by state subsidies, but most of the costs are borne by the parents.

Unfortunately, the school's financial resources are significantly too low to tackle the challenges ahead in full and with the necessary speed.

At least to tackle the challenges ahead in full and with the necessary speed.

Headmaster Abkasa joined the school in 2012 and has since facilitated an impressive transformation.

In the years before 2012, the school was below average in the national comparison. The children's living conditions were poor and the school's financial situation allowed little change. Since then, more attractive employment contracts have enabled Abkasa to hire many young teachers to help him develop the school. Teaching is entirely in English and follows the national curriculum.

Lupila Secondary School is now the second best school in the region, and often performs better than public schools in the national final exams.

Secondary School Lupila

Currently, 491 girls and 325 boys attend the secondary school in Lupila. There has been a partnership with various organisations from Hamburg for over 20 years and we have been able to observe the school's impressive development in close cooperation. The headmaster Abkasa Ngwale in particular has been able to double the size of the school in the last 6 years, while at the same time steadily improving the school and the average performance in the national final examinations.

Primary School Lupila

The local primary school is attended by 430 children aged 6-11. The high level of motivation and commitment of the local team in particular continue to convince us to provide targeted support together. We have already successfully financed the installation of a complete electrical infrastructure, which has significantly improved the learning atmosphere and teaching. We are currently working together on further initiatives, such as improving nutrition and classrooms.

8km to school as a primary school child

In the mountainous region of Lupila, the children sometimes have to walk over 2 hours to school each day. While the secondary school also offers sleeping facilities, the primary school pupils have to walk to and from school every day.

Over 50 primary school children for 1 teacher, and this is the staff room

The equipment in the schools is often very old and in need of renovation. Due to the rapid population growth, there is a lack of teachers and state funding to create adequate learning conditions.

1 in 4 children grow up completely without schooling

As parents in the region sometimes lack money, the children have to grow up at home and help as quickly as possible in the household or in the fields. The primary and secondary schools are now trying to counteract this through scholarships and externally funded meals at the schools. We also support them in this endeavour!
